The history of Blackhall Yard
Blackhall Yard dates back to the 16th century and owes its name to Black Hall, the Stricklandgate residence of Henry Wilson, who was the first Alderman of Kendal. It was developed in 1556, shortly after Kendal received its charter from Queen Elizabeth the 1st, to serve Black Hall in despatching and receiving goods.

Black Hall itself became a brush factory after 1869 and the sign of the 'bristling hog' can still be seen in front of Halifax Property Services, situated next to the Yard.
